Human Powered VehiclesA human powered vehicle (HPV) is, broadly, any vehicle powered solely by human muscular effort. The most common HPV is the bicycle. Recumbent bicycles are a common variant, and have broken human powered speed records (but they cannot be used in UCI cycling events). The tandem bicycle is a form of bicycle designed to be powered by more than one person. Originally the 'tandem' was composed of welding two bicycle frames together to form a two-person bicycle. A unicycle is a one-wheeled human powered vehicle. Unicycles are similar to, but less complex than, bicycles. A tricycle is a small land vehicle, human powered, similar to a bicycle, but with three wheels. These wheels can be arranged either with one steering in front and two parallel behind (delta), or with two steering in front and one behind (tadpole). A pedicab, also known as a velotaxi, is a human-powered vehicle for hire, usually with one or two seats for carrying passengers in addition to the driver. A velomobile is a human-powered vehicle, fully enclosed for protection from weather and possibly from collisions. They are virtually always single-passenger vehicles. They are derived from bicycles and tricycles, with the addition of a full fairing (aerodynamic shell). Human powered aircraft have been built and flown, there are examples in the IHPVA's Air section (see external web link below). Human powered boats and even submarines also exist. A Racing Bicycle is a bicycle designed for road cycling according to the rules of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).
