DAY 7, Dunsborough - Yallingup - DunsboroughSUNDAY 16 OCTOBER 2005 This was the first of two 'rest days' by which I mean riding less than 40km. There was a fresh south-easterly wind. I left the motel at 767 at mid-morning and climbed the hill towards the cave. I reached the cave turn-off at 775. The road curves and goes steeply downhill to find the hole in the ground, the entrance to the cave, now called Ngilgi cave. There are more structures there now and some rangers and it costs $15. When I first went down in 1978 it cost $1 and there was just one man and a small booth. There were quite a few people there. It was a semi-guided tour, you go down the stairs then stand and listen to a short lecture before wandering around at your own pace. We were allowed to take photos - I had my camera and would have taken photos anyway, but I thought it might be forbidden for fear of offending the sacred Wagyl, or something. I took photos of the priest during high mass in Notre Dame in Paris. I took dozens of pictures all over Europe in places where it was for-bidden. The digital camera is good in indoor light, and if you don't use a flash, no-one knows the difference.
Before going into the cave I had noticed a lovely pink orchid on the way to the entrance, and had resolved to get photos of it later. But when I came out of the cave, I couldn't find it! It took ages of wandering around before I spotted it and got some pictures.
After that I rode on to Yallingup and found the little settlement at the top of the hill not much changed. The one at the bottom was not much changed either. The big changes are going on elsewhere. I came over the hill and saw the glorious view of the beach and the seascape and the buildings nestled into the hill. After the steep descent I carried the bike onto the beach and enjoyed a surf in an area clear of rocks. I took a picture of this.
This was a lovely swim and I didn't come out until I started feeling cold. I carted the bike back to the café and had a pie and a choc milk, then toiled back up the steep hill to the settlement and turned into Caves Road at 782. At 785 I turned into Wildwood Road and enjoyed a ride through forests and pastures, stopping for a drink and to take yet more flower pictures. There was a nice patch of 'Kangaroo paws'.
The road, like Caves Road, was quite hilly and there was a SE headwind. At 790 I turned into Commonage Road and found the going easier, especially when I reached the edge of the scarp again and got a view of the sea and the plain and had a good downhill run. I reached Dunsborough at 802. I had been looking forward to another swim and spa but found the whole area locked up. I rang Reception and the man told me that the pump in the spa had broken down and they couldn't get it fixed till Monday, and the temperature of the pool was only 17deg. So no-one would want to swim, so he had just locked the whole area up. Oh well. I had a nice hot shower instead, had another Big Pig pizza and settled down for yet another evening of laziness and videos and reading. Reading at Dunsborough, end of day: 802. Km for day: 35. Aggregate: 401. Km/day: 57.
